NEW YORK FUCKING CITY
Though it's true we prefer the Cali sunshine over that NYC grind, however there are some NYC attributes that we just can't resist. One of them just so happens to be our photogrpaher of the week, the insanely talented and thankfully hilarious, Nicholas Padula.
What are you influenced by, and what led you to take up photography? I guess you can say I’m influenced by almost everything, but really what influences
me is the craziness in my head. Constantly trying to figure things out and make a reality of the nonsense floating around in my head. The life of creative people is kind of a great compromise most of the time, at least for me. There are things I want to do and the things I can actually accomplish. All of it stems from a semi-clear thought in my head and me trying to make sense of it. Sometimes I do and sometimes I don’t. A buddy of mine from school led me to photography. My second round of school was for graphic design. I hated the images that I had to use for the projects I was creating. I thought I could do better and create stuff specifically for what I wanted to do with my overall piece. So a buddy had enough of me bitching, took me to a consignment arehouse and I picked up a Canon AE-1 for cheap and never looked back. I became obsessed and addicted.
Do you remember the first photo you ever took? What was it? My first memory of taking a photograph was actually when I was really young. My
father, sister and I went to a zoo. My sister and I had cheap little point and shoot film cameras. Hers was pink and mine was blue. I actually remember snapping some pics on the trip there as well as at the actual zoo. I remember we pit stop along the side of the road and took a picture of this scene of mountains (I grew up in Arizona). I remember responding to my dad’s question if I got a picture, “Yes, I took one and then I took a close-up.” It wasn’t until the end of the trip that my dad realized my “close-up” pictures was me turning the camera around and looking threw the camera backwards because when you looked through the viewfinder that way, it seemed as thought you were 20 feet closer or something. So yeah, 5 year old me took some awesome pictures of a section of my face basically haha. But as far as my recent obsession goes, I just shot a test roll on the Canon AE-1. So it was probably just a photo of Something in the house or in the backyard.
What has been your favorite photo, or series of photos you have ever taken? I honestly have no idea. My first shoot in NY still contains some of my favorite photos. But the photos on the 35mm Photo Diary section of my website are up there too. But I don’t remember taking half of them, which might be why I like them. They are all taken on a point and shoot or disposable for the most part. So it’s drink, point and click. I like the documentation aspect of those. If I’m being absolutely honest, I haven’t taken my favorite photo yet.
Who would you love to photograph? Every woman I fall in love with. But here in NY that happens about every five minutes and my little heart can barely take it.
Hypothetical question: It’s the last photo you will ever take, and there is no limit to what you create. What do you capture, where is the location and who is in it? As much as I’m moving in a direction of really trying to set a stage or a scene or create a character, a lot of my work at this point has really been forming that human connection with another person and capturing moments. As big of a hard ass as I try to act sometimes, I think my last photo would have to be that perfect moment of human connection. To just be with someone and to be able to look at her, and in that moment, absolutely nothing exists but the two of you. To be able to capture that would be amazing. I’d want that to be my last photo or memory probably.
Whats the most unexpected thing that people could discover about you? I don’t know. I’ve been told I’m an enigma an obnoxious amount of times in my life. I know what enigma means, but I don’t really know what that says about me that people would go out of their way to tell me that I am one to them.
We believe that every tee has a story, what is your favorite tee and what is the story behind why it’s your fave? Honestly, I’m such a basic bitch. I wear plain tees and jeans pretty much everyday. Mostly black ones.
Where can we find you?
Other: Hopefully in the fantasies of a bunch of Australian Babes. Preferably with an abundance of fur coats and bikinis haha…I’m such an ass ignore me.
